Frederick W. Vanderbilt Garden Association, Inc.

The Italian Gardens at Vanderbilt Historic Site on Route 9, Hyde Park, N.Y. cover three acres of land distributed on three levels: the annual garden, the perennial garden, and the rose garden.

Open seven days a week from 9:00am - dusk, the gardens have been restored by a volunteer group which works with the National Park Service to make this lovely area available to the public. A self-guided tour brochure is available at the entrance of the gardens. There is no admission fee.

The cherry tree walk and the pool garden were restored in 1986 with over 3,200 perennials. The rose garden consists of approximately 1,400 hybrid tea roses and numerous climbers.

The first formal gardens on the estate were laid out in the early 1800's by Belgian landscape architect Andre Parmentier, when the land was owned by Dr. David Hosack. When Frederick Vanderbilt bought the estate in 1895, he added the rose garden, pools and statuary, and built additional greenhouses for the propagation of plants.
