Tall Tales for Kindergarten, First and second Grade Readers

Jack and the Beanstalk
by Steven Kellogg ****

I just finished reading this great book. The pictures are great. They have lots of detail and lots of bright colors in them too. I think boys and girls in grades K through 2 will really enjoy this book because it has interesting illustrations of Jack, the Giant and other characters. The characters are Jack, the mother, ogre and the ogre's wife.

The most exciting part of the book happened when the ogre was chasing Jack down the beanstalk. The ogre fell down and broke his crown. Now he is dead for good.

The end of the book was a very happy ending because Jack lived with a beautiful princess after he killed the giant. Jack's mother had a good time with Jack's money.

Iva Dunnit
by Carol Purdy ****

It is a tall tale with 27 pages. The pictures are very very good and the faces from some of his other books look alike. I think boys and girls in grades K through 5 will really enjoy this book because it is very good! I also think it is sort of funny when the kids are having a pillow fight.

The most exciting part of the book happened when Iva Dunnit was hanging on to the roof with only her garments on! The end of the book was funny because the man was in Iva's dress.

Sally Ann Thunder and Whirlwind Crocket
by Steven Kellogg ****

I just finished reading Steven Kellogg's tall tale, Sally Ann Thunder and Whirlwind Crocket. The book has 38 pages. The pictures are good because there are 10 children and Sally Ann can talk and run when she is a baby. That is how we know it's a tall tale.

I think boys and girls in grades K through 4 will really enjoy this book because there are great pictures with lots of details and it's very funny. Plus it's written by the best tall tale writer, Steven Kellogg.

The most exciting part of the book happened when Sally Ann beat up the crocodiles when they were playing King of the Mountain. After that she made a tornado out of the twirling crocodiles. The end of the book was funny because Sally Ann beat up someone that dressed up as a crocodile in order to see how tough she was.

I Was Born about 10,000 Years Ago
by Steven Kellogg ****

I just finished this tall tale by Steven Kellogg. The pictures are good because they are not black and white. The pictures look like they were done with watercolor. I think boys and girls in grades 1 through 4 will really enjoy this book because it's funny and it rhymes. I really liked the picture of the Satan dude in the Garden of Eden.

The most exciting part of the book happened when the cows from Texas came to Seattle and climbed up buildings. There were so many cows that we couldn't count them. The end of the book was good because all of the kids had a party. They had a good time. They celebrated whoppers being made into rhyme.

Pecos Bill
by Steven Kellogg ****

I just finished reading Steven Kellogg's tall tale, Pecos Bill. It has 36 pages. The pictures are very detailed. Some pictures are funny and some are scary.

I think boys and girls in grades 1 through 4 will really enjoy this book because it's exciting and still easy to read.

The most exciting part of the book happened when Bill scared the bull out of its skin with a blood-curdling coyote howl. The end of the book was a happy one because all of bill's family had a party and stayed in Texas.

William, Grade 2

Paul Bunyan
by Steven Kellogg ****

I just finished reading Paul Bunyan by Steven Kellogg. This tall tale has 19 pages. The pictures are colorful. We think the pictures were done by watercolors. They have very good details.

I think boys and girls in grades K through 4 will really enjoy this book because it's a tall tale about an extremely tall lumberjack who did some very unusual things. The book is illustrated and written very well. We hope that all the people who read this book will enjoy it!

The most exciting part of the book happened when Paul Bunyan found Babe in the snow. Babe and Paul grew up together and Babe never changed his color of blue from when he was found. The end of the book was Babe and Paul gave up lumbering and traveled to untouched wilderness where they could be free at last.
